Patient Education - The Eclectic Approach

80% of the population suffers from back pain at some point in their life time.  Back and neck pain is the second most common symptom reported to persons visiting their primary care physician and the most frequent complaint of individuals seen by orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and occupational medicine physicians.

The Period between 1995 and 2010 has been a very exciting time for health care providers managing spinal injuries.   We have learned that those individuals who elect a conservative route are more likely to have a better outcome than those who elect surgery.

Back pain has many different causes with regard to its etiology and responsiveness to interventions.  Emerging evidence supports the hypothesis that classifying patients with low back pain into subgroups based on signs and symptoms, and basing treatment on the sub-grouping produces better outcomes when compared with treatments not based on classification methods.

There is no "magic bullet" when treating spinal injuries.  But instead, a combination of interventions has been found to be the most effective treatment approach.  The experience and advanced training of the physical therapists at Edelman Spine & Orthopaedic Physical Therapy will provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that will be specific to your condition.

Depending on your clinical presentation, your treatment plan may include a combination of the interventions based on the current literature and best clinical practice.  Your physical therapist will outline the details.   We fondly refer to it as pieces of the pie and consider this an eclectic approach!

If it is your low back pain, total hip replacement or rotator cuff tear, we will take an eclectic approach when developing your treatment plan.

Carol Kabis Sheats

CAROL KABIS SHEATS received her BS and Physical Therapy Certificate from the University of Delaware in 1988.  She became a Board Certified Orthopaedic Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists in 2002, and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association as well as the APTA’s Orthopaedic Section.  Her experience includes more than twenty-nine years in Orthpaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Course work with Gregory and Vicky Johnson of the Institute of Physical Art has influenced her understanding of posture and function, especially Back Education and Training.

Experience in Yoga, Tai Chi, Karate, Pilates, Alexander Technique, and the Feldenkrais Method has also added to her approach of teaching efficient use of the body.

In 2003, Carol was asked by a colleague to teach an adult education course.  She prepared a program of information that she has found to be most helpful to her patients, while striving to make it as fun and simple as possible.  Her books Living Posture, Please Don’t Sit Like a Banana (both out of print at this time) were completed to help others understand how remarkably the body is designed to function successfully throughout life.  Educational handouts provided on www.esopt.com are used in our clinic to reinforce the postural advice we give our patients.

Carol and her husband David live in Odessa, Delaware.  They have three grown children, and four grandchildren.  She enjoys the outdoors, gardening, kayaking, woodworking, sewing, walking, yoga and especially time with her family.

As mentioned above, we take an eclectic approach when treating the spine.  We draw from the best techniques available, the best published evidence and combine that with 20 plus years of clinical experience.  Posture education is one piece of the puzzle that has a lasting benefit to our patients.  We offer our handouts below to help with reinforcement of the ideas and also for convenience.  Click on the link below to access the files.
